ACT Network

The Network is a non-profit community organisation that is not aligned with specific political or religious views.  It supports the 'journey of healing' amongst local Indigenous communities who are still living with the effects of earlier Australian policies that separated Indigenous children from their families and communities.  The journey also involves healing between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

The
Network is a local coalition of community and reconciliation groups, churches, and Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals.  It was originally formed as the Canberra Sorry Day Network in 1997, after a meeting called by a group of Community leaders in Canberra in response to the Bringing them home Report.

The
Network organised a number of events for National Sorry Day on 26 May 1998.  This was recommended by the Bringing them home Report, which documented the stories of Indigenous people who had been forcibly removed from their families and their communities.

Since Sorry Day, the
Network has continued to meet regularly as it was considered important to move on from 'sorry' and towards the long process of healing, and to progress the Bringing them home recommendations in the ACT area.

Network meetings are informal, and sometimes have speakers on particular topics. Any interested person can attend Network meetings. Several sub-groups report to the monthly Network meetings, including an incorporated group, Journey of Healing (ACT) Inc.

Membership of
Journey of Healing (ACT) Inc. (JoHACT) is open to anyone who supports its objectives. A Management Committee of JoHACT is elected each year at an Annual General Meeting, and meets as needed. The Committee manages accountability for occasional project grants, and for public donations which are the main source of income. A PDF copy of our latest Annual Report may be found at the end of this page.

Many Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals and groups have been involved in the Canberra Journey of Healing Network, either regularly or from time to time, including:
